Program Description:

APSU in Netherlands and Germany
Summer 2025: Dates TBA

Program Overview

This program will take students to The Netherlands and Germany to study both comparative criminal justice systems and international criminal courts. The purpose of this program is to provide a foundation for our students to understand criminal justice in a global context, both from a comparative and international perspective. While most criminal justice courses focus on the American justice system, it is also important for students to study other historical and cultural perspectives on crime and justice. In this program, students will have the opportunity to learn about the legal and justice systems in Germany and The Netherlands and see how they compare to the American systems. This course focuses on the historical foundations set by the Nuremberg trials for the establishment of an international justice community and how it pertains to international human rights law and the formation of the International Criminal Court and various other Special Tribunals.

Credit Hours and Courses
3 Credit Hours

Courses to be Taught On-Site—Though the criminal justice department currently offers study abroad programs in England and Ireland, this program will differ in focus from those currently offered. However, it will fulfill the same requirements of either the CRJ 4030/5030 Comparative Criminal Justice course or as the CRJ 4900/5900 Special Topics course for students who have already completed CRJ 4030/5030. For undergraduate criminal justice majors, CRJ 4030 satisfies one of the two required courses in the Process and Institutions section of the CJ core curriculum. CRJ 4900 has been used as a substitution when students who have already completed the CRJ 4030/4050 course opt to enroll in a second study abroad program at a different location. Non-criminal justice students may enroll in the course for elective credits applied toward the 120 required credits to graduate.

Instructional Model—This course will be taught in two parts—an online CRJ 4030/5030 course during Spring II followed by an EXCH 0000 course during the actual travel component of the program.  Prior to departure and as part of the Spring II coursework, students will complete required readings with corresponding quizzes, and active learning assignments meant to prepare students for travel and provide foundational knowledge of the places we will go and what we will study.  During the travel component, much of the student learning will occur during site visits and educational excursions.  Many site visits will include instruction by either the faculty program directors or by institutional representatives such as when we visit the International Criminal Court, Dutch Parliament, and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. While studying abroad, students will complete content reflection assignments to reflect on and process the information they learned during each visit and relate it to course materials studied during the Spring II course.

Lodging and Meals

Students will reside in hostels, hotels, or rental housing. Students will receive a per diem to cover the cost of meals.
