Credit Hours and Courses -- 3 Credit Hours
MGT 3250 by Professor Asit Bandyopadhayay
COMM  by Professor Pam Gray
ENGL 2330 (World Literature APSU Required Core Course -- Students can also register for the "honors" section) by Professor Mickey Wadia

Traditions in World Literature, provides APSU students with a broad overview of world literature from different time periods. Students can expect to read works of poetry, prose, and drama from ancient cultures, the Medieval and Renaissance periods, and more recent times. ENGL 2330 is a required course in the general education core and is the prerequisite for all upper-level English literature classes. (3 credit hours).  It is intended to provide an overview of world literature by analyzing works from various literary genres drawn from a range of cultures and historical periods. London, in particular, with its rich literary traditions, provides a perfect backdrop for the study of world literature.

This course also explores how great writers refract their world and how their works are transformed when they intervene in our global cultural landscape. National literatures rarely grow up in isolation from the cultures around it; from the earliest periods, great works of literature have probed the tensions, conflicts, and connections among people that engendered it, neighboring cultures and often more distant regions as well. While in some instances students will be exposed to excerpts from great works, in others they will be required to read the entire text itself. Students will be expected to write a minimum of two (2) essays in addition to on-site presentations, quizzes, short answer identifications etc. Some pre-course readings will occur before travel. Students will have time post-travel to complete their assignments. Course specifics will be provided later to students who have officially registered for the British DEAL World Literature program in Harlaxton Manor and London.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to (a) use critical thinking skills to gain insight into cultural, historical and literary contexts; (b) demonstrate an awareness of the tools of literary analysis, including appropriate terminology common to literary criticism; (c) use effective academic writing skills including proper use of primary and secondary sources; (d) understand the commonality of human experience reflected over the ages in world literatures; (e) evaluate genres of writing and write in appropriate modes for a variety of purposes and audiences; (f) interpret literary texts deploying ideas from works of criticism and theory and pay attention to ambiguity, complexity, and aesthetic values.

Note: Students taking 2330 must have completed English 1010 and English 1020 successfully. We will be using PDF versions of the texts where possible so that students will not have to transport a weighty world literature anthology. Pre-reading of assigned works will ensure a much greater chance of success in this study abroad program. More details will be provided to the students who have officially registered for the British DEAL program in May 2024 in Harlaxton Manor and London.

Note: Credit cards are necessary due to not many places not using physical British Pounds! Master Cards or VISA are ideal! Students should plan to use British Pounds and credit cards.
