Program Overview
This program will provide a hands-on learning experience involving geochemistry, agricultural practices, and environmental issues in Iceland. The course will stress the importance of interdisciplinary work in STEM disciplines and the inherent struggle of balancing human needs and environmental impacts. Specific topics will include: geothermal environments and energy, glacial geology, climate change, aqueous geochemistry, aquaculture, bauxite manufacturing, geothermal baking, and sustainability.

Learning Objectives: On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and explain human influences on nature.
2. Explain the importance of STEM fields in Iceland from a broad perspective, and also the importance of interdisciplinary studies from a global perspective.
3. Analyze and explain how the student's specific area of interest plays a role in the Icelandic environment.
4. Explain how a countries resources can influence its energy consumption practices.
5. Develop detailed field/laboratory note-taking skills and be able to explain the importance of having clear, detailed notes.

These assignments will provide the background for more in-depth discussions during the field study. It will also establish course expectations and will cover field health and safety. Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on experiential learning including guided tours, field activities, and hikes with student-led discussions at points of interest.
