APSU in Costa Rica

Summer 2025 • Biology • Open to all Majors • Undergraduate & Graduate
Dates TBA
Program Overview
Experience the many diverse tropical ecosystems of Costa Rica during this study abroad opportunity. Some discovery opportunities you will be offered during this program include visiting the lowland rainforest in La Selva, the cloud forest at Monte Verde, the dry forest at Santa Rosa, and coastal beaches, including the Manuel Antonio Reserve and Playa Hermosa. During these excursions, you will be encountering and studying the biodiversity of these ecosystems. You will study the plants and animals of Costa Rica, their ecology, and their conservation concerns while participating in interesting activities, including guided natural history hikes, which may happen during both morning and night, a river boat tour, bat mist-netting, and seminars on important topics like amphibian decline. You will experience firsthand sustainable and fair-trade farming practices on a coffee farm, learn how chocolate is made, and gain awareness of the impacts of ecotourism and carbon offset programs. Apart from your studies, you will enjoy cultural experiences like a Costa Rican cooking class, a dance class, and an overnight stay with a local family for two nights. You may also participate in recreational activities, including a canopy walk or zip lining. Come explore tropical ecology, biodiversity, and conservation at our Austin Peay in Costa Rica program!
